In short

  • The founder of ETH Denver says the market downturn has reduced the hype and sharpened the builders’ focus.
  • Conference participants describe a more intimate audience driven by return on investment.
  • In addition to technology, ETH Denver also emphasizes art and mental well-being.

Cryptocurrency prices may have fallen, but the mood inside ETH Denver on opening day is good.

Despite the cold, a line formed outside the new venue, the National Western Center, long before the doors opened.

For ETH Denver founder John Paller, the event reflects a year of work that began immediately after last year’s event.

“A lot of people think this is the beginning, but for our team we actually haven’t stopped compared to last year,” he said. Declutterwho describes the first day as ‘the crescendo’.

While the cryptocurrency market recession dominates headlines, Paller says ETH Denver thrives during recessions.

“ETH Denver has always benefited from bear markets,” Paller said, noting that sponsors are reducing event budgets and concentrating spending.

However, Paller acknowledged that turnout is expected to be lower than in peak years.

“Instead of 25,000 there will only be 10,000 or 8,000 people or something like that,” he said, but added that the event continued to expand compared to previous editions. “As of 2020, we were at 2,500, so the core has still grown and the signal has grown.”

“The noise-to-signal ratio will be much better,” he said. “Just a lot less noise, a lot higher signal. The people here are serious and care deeply about the future of web three and the user-owned Internet.”

Russel Castagnaro, founder of Eenhoorn.ethsaid the change in atmosphere is noticeable.

“There are many more people who are seriously interested,” Castagnaro said Declutter. “It’s gotten so big in the last two years that everyone just had to be there. Now when they come, they really want to get ROI for themselves. They want to make sure they’re meeting people, building and being exposed to all the new technologies. It’s much more back to the roots in many ways, but in an evolved state.”

For some new visitors, like Tyler Gentry, founder of fintech consultancy EMERGENCY AIDthe appeal of coming to ETH Denver lies in observing how decentralized communities operate.

“I came to ETH Denver to see how a DAO cooperative community is coming together in real time and to explore how NEED-AID can use that blueprint to democratize nonprofit giving and unlock the next generation of donors,” he said.

But the atmosphere around ETH Denver isn’t just about the latest trends in AI or crypto markets. The Zen Zone, located near the entrance, is all about art and mental well-being before the panels and networking begin.

“The atmosphere kept me coming back,” says Shana Douglas, co-founder of the blockchain education and outreach project NFT CLT, said. “I’ve been here for four or five years when we were in the castle and it was super intimate. So this isn’t as intimate as that, but it certainly sets the tone for a strong builder community and makes sure we all have a good atmosphere.”

NFT CLT co-founder Tony Bravado said this year’s ETH Denver feels “more intimate.”

“To build community, we need to have close-knit places where people can come together, where people can share different ideas, and where people can promote well-being,” he said. “You have AI, you have wellness, all together, and it just feels good to be here.”

While prices remain well below previous highs, ETFs have lost millions, and sentiment on Crypto Twitter has turned decidedly bearish, attendees at ETH Denver, while a smaller gathering than in years past, seem focused not only on building new technologies but also on building a stronger community heading into 2026.
