  • The network’s token, DMAIL, fell 70% that day, hitting a new low price.

Dmail Network, a decentralized email platform that had been operating for five years, announced that it will phase out all services starting May 15. The team had been working to build what it called “truly decentralized email,” the closing said. announcement.

The Dmail Network team cited multiple factors behind their decision to close in a post published Thursday. According to the operators, decentralized infrastructure costs for bandwidth, storage and computing proved to be extremely high and took up a large portion of their budget, making sustainable operations impossible. These costs increased exponentially with user growth, the team said.

The platform also suffered from failed monetization efforts and token economies that never managed to achieve product-market fit. The team said they experimented with different paid models and commercialization paths, but could never find a sustainable scenario that users were willing to pay for. The project’s token has never developed clear, large-scale use cases and, according to its operators, has failed to create a functioning economic model.

Additional challenges included the departure of the core team, leaving the remaining members without the capacity to maintain the expensive infrastructure. Dmail Network also experienced multiple rounds of failed financings and failed acquisition attempts.

Users must export their email content to other platforms by May 15, after which all nodes will become inactive and emails will no longer be accessible.

The closure of Dmail Network reflects a broader struggle in the decentralized social and communications sector. The team acknowledged that they had “actually anticipated this outcome” after observing other platforms’ problems.

The operators specifically pointed to the “transformations” experienced by Lens, a decentralized social platform, and Friend.tech as indicators of the challenges facing Web3 communications projects. These platforms have faced similar challenges in achieving sustainable user adoption and revenue models while competing with established centralized alternatives.

“If conditions allow in the future, we hope to relaunch in a more mature form. But for now, we must bow to reality,” they wrote. “If it is possible, we hope that the crypto market will pay more attention to products rather than just prices.”

On that note, the DMAIL token on BNB Chain has fallen nearly 70% in the past 24 hours, according to data from CoinGecko, recently trading at $0.000167 and hitting a new low earlier Friday. At its recent price, DMAIL is down almost 100% after peaking at $0.97 in early 2024, shortly after launch. The current market cap is under $15,000.
