AI in Hollywood? ‘Silicon Valley’ Star T.J. Miller Isn’t Worried

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping numerous industries, impacting everything from crypto trading and security to Hollywood productions – and even live events (supposedly).

At this week’s ETH Denver conference for Ethereum developers, actor and comedian TJ Miller addressed that fear, joking that an AI bot “replaced” him for a hosting gig at the event.

Jokes aside, in an interview with Decipher, Miller said he’s not too concerned about losing his job anytime soon due to the AI ​​uprising.

“I’m not that worried that AI could take my job,” he said. “As far as hosting, being really funny and having the energy, I’m not afraid of losing.”

Miller, known for his role on HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” said the pace of AI development has outpaced most people’s ability to process it: “It’s happening so quickly and before our eyes.”

Miller’s comments come as a renewed conversation about generative AI has gripped the entertainment industry after an unauthorized AI-generated video of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise fighting went viral last week. While AI tools can bring efficiency benefits to productions large and small, there are real fears of massive job losses as a result.

Concerns about AI replacing human workers in white-collar jobs have also increased in the past year as more companies experiment with automation. Last week, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman warned that most professional administrative tasks could be fully automated within the next two years.

However, Miller rejected the idea that AI poses an existential threat to his work as a performer. A more pressing concern, he said, is that people are turning their lives over to AI, allowing automation to replace participation.

“Many of us – actually all of us – are uncomfortable with the idea of ​​handing your life over to artificial intelligence,” he said, “and saying, ‘You take care of everything.’”

At this year’s ETH Denver, developers are increasingly pitching blockchain infrastructure as a way to support AI agents in automating trading, identity and portfolio management. Against that backdrop, Miller’s comment about being replaced by a bone echoes the plot of an episode of “Silicon Valley” from years ago.

When asked if Silicon Valley anticipated today’s AI boom, Miller credited creator Mike Judge – also known for “Beavis and Butt-Head” – with accurately predicting the cultural shifts.

“It was prophetic because it was Mike Judge,” Miller said. “He mentioned Trump’s presidential election, and he mentioned the death of American office space.”

However, he said the current AI wave, with its potential transformative impact on almost all facets of modern life, goes beyond anything depicted on television.

“None of us can imagine what is happening now,” he said.
